- Failed suiter to Mary, queen of Scots. He died insane, his estates passing to his younger brother, the Marquess of Hamilton, whose grandson, the first duke of Hamilton (1606-49), played a disastrous role in the royalist cause in the English civil war. The fourth duke (1658-1712) was killed in a duel with Lord Mohun.
