- Elizabeth Buckner had a daughter, Catherine, who married William W. Monroe. their daughter, Frances Pope Monroe, married John Doss. Frances' and John's daughter, Tommie Mabel Doss, married William Henry Day in 1879. William was a Texas rancher who was said to be the first to use barbed wire (here in Texas we say 'bob war'). William Henry Day was fatally injured in a cattle stampeed in 1881, leaving Tommie Mabel with a 6-month old daughter, Willie Mabel Day. In 1889, Tommie Mabel Day married another rancher from New Mexico, Joseph Lea. In about 1904 Willie Mabel married James Padgitt and had a son James Padgitt Jr. James Padgitt Jr. married Lillian Maverick who was the gr-grandaughter of Samuel Maverick, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. History tells us that Samuel Maverick did not brand his cattle, so, at roundup time, all the unbranded cattle were his. This is where the term Maverick originated. James Padgett Jr. & Lillian Maverick had 3 daughters, one of whom, Lillian padgitt, still ranches the padgitt Ranch today.
